This is my great grandfather. Spanish-American War veteran; he enlisted in 1892 until Jan 1996, got married in Feb, and re-enlisted in 1897, was wounded 1 July 1898, and discharged 10 Dec. 1898. John spent 2 years in hospitals after getting shot in both knees at the Battle of San Juan Hill. He met Margaret Mary "Maggie" O'Brien at a dance in Florida while training for military, they were married 17 Feb 1896 and she went to his mother's home in KY to wait for him. After he was wounded, Maggie returned to Florida to wait for him to be released from hospital. They had 10-12 children. He had problems with his legs for the rest of his life, but went to hot springs for therapy and swam in the pond behind their home often. Family settled in Washington Co, Kentucky.
