In 1826, Dr Chapmon Powell erected a log cabin on the old Indian Trail known as Shallow ford Trail, today you will recognize it as Clairmont Road. Dr. Powell's Indian patients called it the "Medicine House".
Dr Powell befriended the Cherokee Chiefs son curing him and became a friend of the Cherokee Nation. His original cabin is now part of the Plantation Complex at Stone Mountain Park. After war came to this site in July of 1864 General McPherson's remains were carried through Decatur to this site.

Gravesite Details
The original marker wa a stone obelish some 10 feet high set upon a granite base and surrounded by an iron fence. The marker has been replaced and most of the iron fence is gone.
