In 1826, Dr Chapmon Powell erected a log cabin on the old Indian Trail known as Shallow ford Trail, today you will recognize it as Clairmont Road. Dr. Powell's Indian patients called it the "Medicine House".
Dr Powell befriended the Cherokee Chiefs son curing him and became a friend of the Cherokee Nation. His original cabin is now part of the Plantation Complex at Stone Mountain Park. After war came to this site in July of 1864 General McPherson's remains were carried through Decatur to this site.

Chapmon Powell is the husband of Elizabeth Hardman Powell. His son-in-law Washington Jackson Houston purchased land from Dr. Powell, his plantation mill was converted into Decatur's first electric power generation plant. Dr Powell's son Oliver, had his house taken and used as General Sherman's headquarters while the general conducted the Battle of Atlanta.
