Dr Powell befriended the Cherokee Chiefs son curing him and became a friend of the Cherokee Nation. His original cabin is now part of the Plantation Complex at Stone Mountain Park. After war came to this site in July of 1864 General McPherson's remains were carried through Decatur to this site.
Chapmon Powell is the husband of Elizabeth Hardman Powell. His son-in-law Washington Jackson Houston purchased land from Dr. Powell, his plantation mill was converted into Decatur's first electric power generation plant. Dr Powell's son Oliver, had his house taken and used as General Sherman's headquarters while the general conducted the Battle of Atlanta.

Gravesite Details
The original marker wa a stone obelish some 10 feet high set upon a granite base and surrounded by an iron fence. The marker has been replaced and most of the iron fence is gone.
