Bingham Apple was born to parents Moses Apple (1815-1876) and Burnetta Ellen Dewitt (1824-1886) on Dec. 15, 1844. His known siblings include: Jesse J. (b. @1847), Thomas Madison (b. @1849), Nancy Ann (1849-1931), Malinda, Delilah A. (b. @1854), and Ellen Dicey (1859-1934). Bingham, a farmhand at the time, joined Co. A, 38TH IND INF as a result of a regimental recruiting drive on the homefront in the fall of 1862 likely led by Capt. James Fouts of Co. C. He was a cousin to John Wesley Apple and the four Apple brothers: David, George, Joseph, and Moses Wester, all of whom served in Co. A. Bingham received a medical discharge for disability on June 4, 1863 after nine months' service with the Thirty-eighth. He saw action at the battles of Perryville, KY and Stones River, TN.

On June 30, 1870, Bingham applied for a veteran's pension (app. #158,881; cert. #141,624 - Indiana). That same year, the Apples were enumerated in the 1870 U.S. Census as residents of Unionville, Orange Co., IN. Julia's sister Virginia Brubeck (b. @1843) was listed as a resident of the Apple household in Greenfield Twp, Orange Co., IN according to the 1900 & 1910 U.S. Censuses. Bingham passed away at age 75 on Dec. 22, 1919. Julia was approved for a widow's pension on Jan. 12, 1920 (app. #1,151,199; cert. #885,273 - Indiana).
