Ruth L. Scallan, 88, of Beaufort, NC, formerly of Crystal River, FL died Thursday, January 8, 2009, at home. She was born in Big Stone Gap, VA to the late Samuel and Berta Lane. Mrs. Scallan was a dedicated worker for Crystal River Moose Lodge where she organized many charitable events. She was an avid Bingo player. Mrs. Scallan moved from Crystal River to Beaufort in 2006 due to health reasons.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2009, at Brooks Funeral Home chapel, Morehead City, NC with the Rev. Ken Turner officiating. The committal service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Magnolia Cemetery, Lecanto, FL.
Daughters: Judy A. Scallan and husband, James Canada, of Beaufort; Patricia Ruth Frederick of Suffolk, VA. Sons: Ashton Joseph Scallan, Jr. of Woodbridge, VA; James Charles Scallan and wife, Nancy, of Woodbridge, VA. Sister: Thelma Carroll of Big Stone Gap, VA. Brother: Thomas Morris of Maryland. 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Ashton Joseph Scallan, Sr., her sisters, Garnie Seymour, Elsie Collier, Addie Barnes and brother, Ballard Lane, preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends at Brooks Funeral Home on Sunday from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Boys and Girls Club of Carteret County, P. O. Box 1514, Morehead City, NC 28557.
