I know that Thomas Young Gill's tombstone reads July 26, 1901, however, I have a copy of his obituary from the July 28, 1899 Landmark Newspaper where it talks of his death. The only explanation I have is that his wife, Mary Melissa Tomlin Gill, died in 1905 and perhaps there was a lapse in memory for the correct year of Thomas's death or his birth when they gave the dates for whom ever carved the stone. The stone is carved on both sides - one is Mary M. Gill and the other side is Thomas Y. Gill. Since the obituary of 1899 reads that he was 87 years old perhaps that is the source of the confusion as he would have been born in 1812 and not 1814. Thus, Thomas Y. Gill would really have been born in 1812 and died in 1899.

Death of an Aged Man
Mr. Thos Young Gill died Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home in the western part of Statesville at the age of 87. The remains were taken to Snow Creek yesterday morning and buried there in the old graveyard. The deceased had lived in Statesville only a few years and being infirm was not known to many of our citizens. He was a quiet, unassuming man who held the respect of all who know him. His wife and five children, one son, Mr. W.H. Gill, of Olin and four daughters, Mrs. A.C. McHargue, and Misses Julia, Rebecca and Emma Gill, all of Statesville, survive him. The deceased was an uncle of Messrs. J.B. and T.A. Gill, of Statesville and a brother of Mr. H.L. Gill of Olin.

His grandparents are:
William Gill
Susanna Young
He also has a son in addition to the children below:
William Henry Gill
