Fred never learned to write and when he moved his family west to Woodbury Co., the people there spelled it like he pronounced it in the German tongue and it became Shever for all of his descendants.

Undated obituary: Sixty years ago, when this community was still in its infancy, Fred Shever like numerous other citizens from Eastern Iowa, came West to this virgin soil to start a new home. He located on a farm in Rock Township, and there he remained until his life work was finished and death summoned him to depart for a better home. Mr. Shever was a good citizen, upright and square in all his business transactions; a true and loyal friend; a helpful neighbor at all times; and a kind and just Father. He fully earned the good will and respect of all those who knew him best. Born at Clinton, Iowa, on June 10, 1860, and passed away October 28, 1942, he had lived into his 83rd year. Mr. Shever's first home was in Clinton County, Iowa. On June 12, 1883, he was united in marriage with Sarah Adams who became the good wife for 57 years her death taking place January 9, 1941.
