Donald L. VanSickel Sr., 74, Altoona, died Tuesday at Altoona Regional Health System, Bon Secours Hospital Campus. He was born in Altoona, son of Francis F. and DoraBelle (Pounds) VanSickel. He married Betty Barkley Dec. 15, 1956, at First Church of God. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Terri Lynn; two sons: Donald VanSickel Jr. and Vincent F. VanSickel; a sister, Leilona Neaffer; and a brother, Larry VanSickel, all of Altoona; five grandchildren: Brooke, Todd, Dustin, Jaime and Matt; and eight great-grandchildren: Thaddeus, Taylor, Nathaniel, Christian, Avery, Jaydon, Nathan and Braeden. He was preceded in death by brothers: Terry R. and George "Hip" Sponslor; and sisters: infant Shirley McConahy, Judy Granata and Dolores Battisti. Don retired as a driver for Penn Furniture Co. He was a graduate of Altoona High School. Don served in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He volunteered for many years at the Altoona Hospital. Don enjoyed bowling, tennis, playing cards, coin collecting and spending time with his family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Leslie E. Axe Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at the Axe & Santella Family Chapel, 1534 Fourth St., Altoona, by Pastor Dick Barr. Interment at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.
