Elias was ordained in 1901 by Yellow River Baptist but had been called into the ministry before 1900 and was elected pastor by a church where he had been a member since 1888. He served several churches in Gwinnett for 31 years. After Piney Grove called him as pastor, he spent weekends there, riding trains to and from Luxomni, GA railroad station. His last pastorate was at Yellow River Baptist where he risigned due to ill healty after 17 years. Although he attended school only six days, he had a great thirst for knowledge and educated himself by home stury so that he could enjoy not only the Bible, but could hold his own withg the best-educated men of his day.
