Military career: Enlisted at the Missouri Arsenal in 1861 in response to Pres. Lincoln's call for 3 months' troops. Participated in the battle of Wilson's Creek on his 18th birthday. Returned home where he re-enlisted for 3 years in the 3rd Missouri Infantry. After the siege at Vicksburg, MS in which he participated, he was appointed by Pres. Lincoln as a cadet in the Military Academy at West Point for meritorious conduct. After graduation in 1867 he received a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the 2nd Artillery serving that time on the Pacific Coast. First assignment was for about 7 months at Alcatraz Island in the harbor of San Francisco. Second assignment was to the island of Kodiak, Alaska, recently purchased from Russia. During this assignment he mastered the Russian language and married the daughter of the retiring Governor of Kodiak. His regiment was returned to Alcatraz for 3 years; then reassigned back east where he had the opportunity to graduate with honors from the Artillery School at Fortress Monroe, VA. Upon graduation he was assigned to Ft. McHenry, Baltimore, MD. At this post he became a 1st Lt. and was assigned to Fort Macon, NC. He died unexpectedly from an illness that appeared to be no more than a simple cold.
