A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Served as a private with Co. D, Litzinger's Independent Infantry Battalion of Emergency Militia June 23 - August 8, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis.
2. Enlisted in McConnellsburg January 28, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 11 as a private with Co. F, 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry (185th Pa). On June 30, 1865, as part of a war-end consolidation effort, he transferred to Co. G, 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry, and honorably discharged with his company October 31, 1865.
After the war, he married Elizabeth Ann Fix and fathered Robert A. (b. 08/??/73), Dora Ellen (b. 02/28/75 - married Thomas Burton Kendall), and Rosa Ann (b. 01/03/78 - married Philip Sheridan Province). By 1880, he was living with his family in Wood River, Dawson County, Nebraska, and, in 1900, following an apparent divorce, with daughter Rosa Ann in Custer County, Nebraska. He married a woman named Anna lnu., twenty years his junior, and returned to Pennsylvania where he died.
PLEASE NOTE that the military history presented on the tombstone is incorrect. John Shaw Brant never served with either the 1st or 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry regiments (43rd Pa and 60th Pa, respectively). Neither did he serve "in response to the first call of his country" given that he enlisted more than two years after the war had begun. In addition, data from the oft-used but highly error-prone Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Card file is misleading enough to be labeled "incorrect." Last, the birth year displayed on the tombstone is wrong.
