Rachel was born in Pennsylvania to a Quaker family. However, her mother converted to Mormonism and eventually moved her family to Nauvoo, Illinois, where Rachel married a Mormon, Warren Smith. Two children were born to this marriage: Charles and Ephraim Smith. Evidently, there was a divorce, as Warren went on to marry again. Rachel then married William Overstreet in 1850 and had 7 more children.
