Mrs. Welch died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, in Lawton.
Burial will be in Walters Cemetery under direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home, Walters.
She was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Seminole County, to Charles and Leona Cathey. She grew up in Seminole County, Denison, Texas, Madill and Cookietown. She married James Louie Welch on Nov. 7, 1926, in Temple. She attended Drahon's Business School in Wichita Falls, Texas. They moved to a farm in Cookietown, where she and her husband were charter members of Union Valley Baptist Church, established in 1928. Later they purchased a country store in the Ahpeatone Community. Some years later they bought a ranch near Bella Vista, Ark. After her husband's retirement, they returned to Oklahoma and settled near Meers, then moved to Landmark Estates near Geronimo. In 1987 they moved to Walters. She was a member of Walters First Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She was a 50-year member of the Homesteaders Extension Club. In her later life she worked as a nurse's aid.
Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Scherler, Walters; three daughters-in-law: Pat Tidwell, Duncan; Edna Welch, Springdale, Ark.; and Patty Welch, Dale, Texas; six grandchildren and their spouses: David Kent Scherler Jr. and Kathy, Sunset, Texas; Margot Elise and Jeff Cook, Waco, Texas; Tammy Dawn and Brad Butler, Sapulpa; Greg Welch, and Garrett Welch, both of Dale, Texas; and Charles Lindle Welch and Laurie, Bishop, Ga.; 18 great-grandchildren: David Kent Scherler III, Kale Cosby Scherler, Louie Jefferson Cook, Peter Scherler Cook, Whitni Dawn Butler, Karli Beth Butler, Gregory Welch, Krista Welch, Dallas Welch, Levi Welch, Charles Brennan Welch, Joshua Patrick Welch, Garrett Welch II, James Welch, Chase Welch, Matthew Welch, Jodi Welch and Jeremy Welch, a great-great-granddaughter, Anna Claire Scherler; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three sons: Tommy, Jimmy and Charles Welch; a son-in law, Kent Scherler; two grandsons: Greg and Kevin Welch; two brothers: Cecil and Lavern "Doc" Cathey; and a sister, Ruth Smith.
