John H. Chapman was a confederate Civil war veteran. He lost his rt. arm July 4, 1863 in battle at Helena, AR and was taken prisoner by Union army under Maj.Gen.Prentiss. He was paroled to Polk's plantation until released.
He returned to McDonald County and farmed. In addition, in the mid and late 1880's he served as the County Assessor. After the loss of his arm he learned to write with his left arm.
