She was the daughter of James D. Gilpin and his first wife, Rachel Lee Groves. Born into families that were of the planter class before the civil war, she never knew anything but hard work. Her husband, Elijah T. Pate, died in 1919, leaving her three children to raise alone. She ran the family grocery store until it closed during the depression, and then was a seamstress for the public and had various other jobs to support the family. She was the step granddaughter of Sherrard Clemens, a well known Virginia congressman at the beginning of the War Between The States.
