Born at Penmennor, Stithians parish, Cornwall, the sixth of ten children of John and Elizabeth Martin. Her father was a carpenter. Her mother died in 1841. On 7 March 1843 she married William Spargo at Stithians. They made their home, initially, with his family at Trembroath. From 1846-53 they lived several miles to the west at Troon, near Camborne where William found employment in the expanding mining industry in that area. They then moved back to Trembroath in Stithians and remained there until the latter 1860's. By 1871 they had relocated westward to the area known as Menherion on the northern foot of Carnmenellis. It was here she died on 14 June 1872 of a tumor which had grown on her trachea and gradually produced strangulation. She had been the mother to 5 children, two of which, a son and a daughter, had died in early childhood. The remaining three, two sons and a daughter, emigrated to the United States.
