In 1966 John, Ruth, and two of their children moved to Muscoda where he was a dairy farmer until retirement in 1996. Always a hard worker, he took pleasure in fishing, rooting for his beloved Cubs, and gardening in later years. He was a devoted member of St. Peter"s Lutheran church. John is survived by two sons: Howard (Mary) Rittgarn and Don Rittgarn; two daughters Helen (Gary) Dowling and Marilyn (David) Teiwes; six grandchildren: Kevin and Ross Dowling; Monica Radcliffe and Alan Rittgarn; Danya and Evan Teiwes; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. His winning smile and good sense of humor will be missed by all.
Services were held on March 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter"s Lutheran Church in Muscoda, Wisconsin, Pastor Mark R. Meier Sr. officiating. Internment will be in Muscoda Public Cemetery. The Godager Funeral Home of Muscoda is assisting the family with their arrangements.

I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty, In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Ever restless tossing passed;I am no at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last.Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade?Oh! But Jesus' love illumined Every dark and fearful glade. And He came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have one doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still:Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's Will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not idly stand;Do it now, while life remained - You shall rest in Jesus' land. When that work is all completed. He will gently call you home:Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh, the joy to see you come!
