Obituary
Shedrick Carney, one of the best known among the old settlers in this vicinity. The men of muscle and patient toil who cleared away the wilderness to make a place for our present civilization, died about midnight between Monday and Tuesday of this week. He was born in Ohio in 1810 and came to this county to remain on February 28th, 1838. He made the journey in bitter cold weather and "settled" on the land when it was covered with several feet of snow. Since then he has done many days of hard work in Clay and Bloomfield townships. He was one of the several contractors who furnished the lumber for the old courthouse at $6.50 per 1,000 feet, and has probably done as much labor as anyone in the old bramble swamp now called LaGrange. For a year or two past he has lived in town. He leaves a fourth wife and twelve children. The funeral was conducted at 10AM yesterday by Rev. H.W. Vaughn. Mr. Carney was 73 years of age on the 29th of April. Source: LaGrange Standard, June 1883.

Married his first wife in Licon Co., Ohio; she died in Lagrange county.
14 Nov 1844 married Helen Dady (1828-1854) Daughter of Spencer and Desdamona Dady
07 Aug 1858 married Malinda May Rambo (1835-1860) Daughter of Lorenzo and Charlotte (Craft) Rambo
24 Aug 1862 married Tryphosa *Courtwright, Ellsworth, Shoup, Reed (1816-1898) Daughter of Daniel and Susannah (Wheeler) Courtwright
Also spelled Cortright/Cortrecht/Kortrecht
