VALLEY PIONEER PASSES TO REWARD AFTER OPERATION
John E. Nield passed away at 2:30 o'clock Thursday morning, August 13 at his home in Afton, Wyoming, surrounded by his family and friends. Death came as a result of more than two years of suffering from a complication of diseases during the last six weeks of which time he became seriously ill. Dr. D.O. Beal the attending Physician for the last two weeks, decided that the only chance for recovery was to undergo an operation, so on Tuesday the operation was preformed. Dr Beal was assisted by a trained nurse from Salt Lake City, who has been at the sick bed for several days. Everything that could possibly have been done to relieve the pain and suffering and restore him to health, was done, but all efforts were in vain and the spirit of his beloved Husband, father and Pioneer went back to its maker.
John E. Nield was born in Sanpete County, Utah, seventy-one years ago, being one of a family of seven children, five boys and two girls. After living sometime there they family moved to Meadow, Millard County, Utah where they lived until they finally moved to star Valley 37 years ago. It was during the time that they lived in Millard, County that there were continuous uprisings of the Indians and the father was often called to go and fight the savages to save his ranch and family from destruction and John E. was an eye witness to these things and remembered them well to the last. He was one of the Pioneers of Star Valley having helped to build the first road into the valley and taking part in all the improvements that have been made.
While still a young man he married Jane Parker and they be came the proud parents of eight children, seven of whom are still living and are among the most loved and respected citizens of Star Valley. The home where he spent his last days in on the homestead that he entered 37 years ago, which has never passed from his ownership. Shortly after his arrival he took the contract to carry the mail from Montpelier, Idaho to Afton, making two trips a week and he held his contract for ten years during which time he purchased the ranch on Crow creek for the convenience of the mail carriers. At the end of the mail contract he retired to his ranch and spent his time and energy making one of the successful Stock Ranchers in the community.
He was a devout Latter Day Saint and tried to live according to the teachings of his accepted religion. His faith was best shown by his liberal contributions. He was always ready to give to worth causes and never refused to answer the call of those placed in authority over him.
He is survived by his wife, two sisters, Elizabeth Wilson of Roosevelt, Utah and Mrs A.J. Taysom of Afton, Wyoming; four brothers, Jos L., James, Seth and Thomas of Afton, seven children, John W., Ben, Sarah J. Allred, Daniel, Opal Miles, Ellis and Ellworth and 31 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday August 15 at the South Ward Chapel.
