Elwin Arthur Farnsworth was born on the family farm located 3.5 miles SE of Edgeley, North Dakota, the eldest son and third of five children born to Elwin Harry and Mabel Lois (Kime) Farnsworth. He lived on the farm and attended country school until the fall of 1937 when the Dust Bowl years caused his father to lose the farm and move into a house in Edgeley, where his father worked occasional jobs to support his family. Elwin A. Farnsworth graduated from Edgeley High School in 1946 and joined the Army, then was stationed in Korea with the US occupation forces after World War II ended. He was a construction project engineer and chief inspector for the ND Highway Dept from 1948 until 1990, aside for 1950-1951 when he was called back into the Army during the Korean War, serving time in Korea and Japan. He married Joyce M. Johnson in Crosby, North Dakota on April 28, 1953 and raised 6 children (Diane, David, Janelle, Julee, James, and Richard) in Bismarck, North Dakota. He was a superb vegetable and rose gardener and a student of Roman and military history.
