Fern was a school teacher. Her given name, Louisa, was in honor of Louisa Ida Gilmore, nee Mauck, who was her great-grandmother; mother of Sarah Elizabeth Lord, nee Gilmore.
She met her first husband, Maxwell Cook, while teaching at Haines City, Florida. They married at Malden, Mass(September 1,1927)and lived in Kings County, Nova Scotia. They had two children. After Max's untimely death in 1930, she returned to her hometown of Corydon, Indiana. There she met and married Clarence Boley(July 9,1932). They had six more children.
