Bettie was the daughter of General Brian Grimes, Jr. (Civil War General in the 4th NC Infantry) and Elizabeth Hilliard "Betsy" Davis. She married Samuel Fox Mordecai, II on 10 Nov 1874. They were the parents of nine children. She died at the home of her son, William Grimes Mordecai, Sr. at the age of 93 years and 3 1/2 months.
