Kissia Barrett was born in Fremont Co., Iowa, November 2, 1863, and passed away at her home in Cushing on Wednesday, July 23, 1924, at 1:35 p.m. having reached the age of 60 years, 8 months and 1 day at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Hiram and Serena Barrett, who resided at Thurman, Iowa. Her progress from childhood into womanhood took place in Fremont Co., Iowa, and it was during her 24th year that she affiliated herself with the United Brethren Church. At the age of eighteen she was united in marriage to William Downey, at Thurman, Iowa, the marriage taking place January 23, 1881. To this union seven children were born: Clara Gertrude who died in infancy, Arthur of Correctionville, Oren of Tacoma, Washington, Vivian of Cushing, Mrs. Belva Ashmore of Washta, Mrs. Bessie Gordon of Washta and Mrs. Goldie Olson of Pierson. The Downey family moved to Woodbury County in 1899, settling in the vicinity of Cushing. They remained in their initial settlement in this county until eleven years ago when they moved to Cushing and have remained in this vicinity since that time. Mrs. Downey was a member of high standing in both the local chapter of the Rebekah Lodge and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She suffered a paralytic stroke on the evening of March 31, 1924, and it was this affliction that caused her death. Survivors include her husband and six children, nineteen grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Bert Baggs of Council Bluffs, Iowa, three brothers, John Barrett of Greeley, Colorado, Andrew of Chenel, Nebraska, and Riley of Pacific Junction, Iowa.
