When Jewel Elizabeth Emmons was born on November 8, 1901, in Grandin, Missouri, her father, John, was 31, and her mother, Sarah, was 29. She married Glenn McDowell on March 26, 1921 and they celebrated their 70th Anniversary together in 1991. Jewell was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was a charter member of the Grandin Eastern Star and enjoyed cooking, baking and working in her garden. She and her husband owned and operated the South Side Market in Van Buren for many years. Jewell loved all of the children and was known by everyone as "Mammee" .

They had two children during their marriage; Kenneth and Doris and eight grandchildrten. She died on December 23, 1999, in Van Buren, Missouri, at the age of 98, and was buried next to Glenn in the Masonic Cemtery.
