Captain John Brewer was one of the earliest settlers of Tyringham, Massachusetts, arriving in 1739, agreeing to build a sawmill "within six months" and to maintain it for at least ten years. A year later, he built a grist mill as well. [SOURCE: Myers, Eloise: TYRINGHAM: A HINTERLAND SETTLEMENT. Pittsfield, MA: Quality Printing Co., 1989, pp. 5-6.]

About 1750, John Brewer built and operated an inn and tavern in Tyringham. Although this area now is known as Monterey rather than Tyringham, the house still stands (2013), one of the oldest structures in the area.
