Marine Corps City Native Dies in Wreck

Marine Sgt. Boyd E. Piper, 15th Ave., age 22, died Sat. Aug. 21, 1971, in auto accident near Socorro NM.

Sgt. Piper stationed at Camp Pendelton, Calif., had reenlisted and was on leave traveling to his wife in Albuquerque, NM at the time when he is believed to have fallen asleep on a four-lane highway. After hitting the medial strip, the car flipped several times and he was thrown from the car with major head injuries.

His body was returned to his family in Blair County where he was born April 25, 1949 to A.Blair and Rozella(McCoy)Piper, and Oct. 10, 1969, married Trudy Rivera of Albuquerque, prior to leaving for Vietnam to serve a 13 month tour as a radio artillary director.

He was a grad. from Milton S. Hershey Prep. School, specialized in printing trades, was student home chaplain, then enlisted in the Marines to specialize in underwater demolition and voice radio repair.

Surviving are his wife, mother, six sibling: Charles, Virginia Chipperfield, S. Walter, Martha Gilbert, Rozella M., and Carl E.; half-siblings: Maude Stewart, C. Marie McCall, Ralph E., Blair M., Helen Magill, Ruth Magill.

Friends received in Liebegott Funeral Home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m Thur., and services at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 1971 with Rev. O. Gene Bartmas. Interment in Carson Valley Cemetery with McConnelsville Marine Corps detachment to provide military honors. AM: 8/25/1971
