Around 1834, Judge Fields sent Lizzie and her sister Amanda (-8 Aug 1849) to Keene NH to be tutored privately (by Mary Morse Parker) then later at the newly opened Keene Academy. They lived with their tutor Mary Morse Parker and became close with her family, including Mary's brother Elijah Parker, a professor at Dartmouth College.

Her parents objected to the marriage on account of the age difference and in the end they eloped. Carolyn Thomas Foreman, Lizzie's daughter, records that "Mr. Coodey and his second wife, Elizabeth Fields, established their home at Frozen Rock on the high bank of the Arkansas." This would be near what is today the town of Muskogee, Oklahoma.
After his death, Lizzie and her children returned to New Hampshire to visit the Parker family.
