He had lived in Central Texas since 1985. He retired from the U.S. Army and from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He was a member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the Copperas Cove VFW Post and the Retired Sergeants Major Association.
Strother was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Darrell Hicks.
Survivors include his wife, Edy Strother of Copperas Cove; two sons, Carey Strother of Burnet County and Troy Strother of Mesa, Ariz.; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Averette of Kempner; and two sisters, Sandy Kerl of Woodville and Barbara Meyers of Livingston.
