Funeral Services Held Thursday for Hobart Cockburn, Veteran Oilman

Funeral services for Hobart Cockburn, 59, were held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Union Presbyterian church of Powell.
The Rev. Geo. Van Leuven officiated at the services. Interment was made in Crown Hill cemetery under the direction of the Easton Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Frank Dearcorn, E. M. Casey, Jim Cruickshank, Ezra Cannon, Carl Kruger, L. L. Smith, O. Solomon, and Harley Bender.
Mr. Van Leuven, soloist, sang "Beyond the Sunset," and a quartet consisting of Don and Earl Jones, Mrs. Dale Thecbald and Karla Barber, sang "Abide With Me."
Mr. Cockburn passed away on Monday at about 10:15 p.m. in the Powell Memorial hospital. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He had suffered a stroke nearly three years ago, but had recovered sufficiently to return to work in the conduct of an oil drilling company which he operated.
He was widely known in Wyoming and Montana among the oil drilling firms and the workmen of this industry. He had followed the life of the "oil patch" since a youth 17 years old. He was drilling superintendent for the Manning Drilling Company prior to forming a partnership with Worth Garetson of Medicine Bow in 1947. Garetson was later killed in an accident to terminate the partnership in 1949. An association was then formed between Mr. Cockburn and Boyles Brothers of Salt Lake City. This partnership was known as Boyles Brothers-Cockburn Drilling Company and was in effect at the time of Mr. Cockburn's death.
Born Dec. 3, 1898, in Wichita Falls, Texas, son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cockburn, he received his early rearing in this community. His work brought him to Bridger, Mont., in 1931. The family moved to Powell in February of 1943 from Baroil and they have maintained their residence here since that time.
He was married to Ethel Hunter on September 3, 1933. During the intervening years the family has resided in Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Montana, and, more recently in Powell. He was a member of the Powell Union Presbyterian Church, Masonic lodge, Kalif temple, Elks lodge and Scottish Rite Consistory.
Survivors include Mrs. Cockburn, four children, J. Wm. Of Powell, Arthur of Cutbank, Montana, Mrs. Dale Stanhope of Billings, and Jerry, still in the Cockburn home; two sisters, Mrs. A. H. Petrick (Petrich) of Riverton, Mrs. M. E. Ratliff of Houston, Texas; two brothers, G.T. Cockburn of Winters, Tex., and H. L. Cockburn of Houston.
