Freehold Transcript, Friday, February 6,1942:
"Mrs. Emma Matthews, aged 77, widow of Joseph I Matthews, died at Tampa, Fla., February 3,1942, where she was spending the winter. She was born in Harmony, the daughter of William C and Elizabeth Cook Applegate, and has resided at 187 East Fourth Street, Lakewood, for many years. Funeral services will be at 2 PM today (Friday) at the First Methodist Church, of which she was a member, and interment will be made in Woodlawn Cemetery, under the direction of the CHT Clayton Funeral Home of Adelphia. The Rev. William Ewen will officiate.
Surviving are a sister in law, Mrs. Jessie A Pulsifer; two nieces, Mrs. Hartley Davison, Mrs. Albert Wainwright, and three nephews, William C, Chester and Howard Applegate, all of Lakewood and vicinity. She was a member of Pride of Liberty Council, Sons and Daughters of Liberty".
