Edith Elizabeth Manley Smith, 94, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Gary Godkin officiating. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Edith was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Kemp, Kaufman County, to Carrie Lee and Henry Grady Manley. In her early years she lived in northwest Dallas County. She moved to West Texas with her family in her teens, where she met and married the love of her life, William Calvin Smith. They moved to Fort Worth in 1942 and raised three children. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. After Calvin suffered a disabling heart attack in 1963, she worked outside the home for the first time in her life.
She worked at Leonard's Department Store and then Dillard's in the linen department for almost 20 years. Edith was a faithful member of Westside Baptist Church and South Hills Baptist Church. She loved to travel and visited relatives and toured with travel groups all over the United States. She was also an avid 42 player, as wll as a jigsaw puzzle expert.
Her family will always have fond memories of the hot yeast rolls and delicious pies she made for all the family dinners and celebrations. She left a lasting legacy of handmade quilts. All her children and grandchildren treasure the many quilts she made especially for each of them.
Edith was a warm, friendly person to all with a great sense of humor and curiousity for all things.
Those waiting for a grand reunion in heaven are her husband, Calvin; her parents; her sisters, Ann and Frances; and her brothers, G.W., Grady and John Henry.
Survivors: Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Jeanie Bielicke and Paul, Richard Smith and Jeanne, and Joyce Martindale; grandchildren, Douglass Martindale and Betty, Dona Martindale, Darla Hoag and Tom, and Daniel Martindale and Kathleen; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
