Harold Ernest Barton, Sergeant pilot, 602, Spitfire Squadron, R.A.F.V.R Service no. 1384013, son of Ernest and Annie Barton, of New Malden. Barton is listed by the C.W.G.C. The entry in his cemetery record indicates that he died in an air crash at Reigate, Surrey, but see my notes below. The memorial was found in abandoned condition and is badly over-grown. 602 was called the City Of Glasgow Squadron and was based in Scotland at the start of the war, moving south at the time of the Battle Of Britain. Note that the cemetery records refer to him, erroneously as H. E. Baston.

new information

I have been kindly informed that Harry Barton crashed at Firle in Sussex. Another pilot, Ftl Lt Barrett gained height to clear local cloud but Harry Barton chose to fly under the cloud and hit a row of buildings. Harry was killed and a Mrs Hughes received burn injuries. Twenty-five people were evacuated from the buildings. Stanford Buildings, built in 1835, had been used as a workhouse for the poor up till 1898, and had been able to accommodate one hundred and eighty persons. It was later converted to private dwellings. The loss of a spitfire and pilot was hushed, to avoid effects on morale in wartime.
