The funeral of Chellis O. Smith, mention of whose sudden death was made in this paper last week, occurred at the Congregational Church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of Rev. Henry Zinnecker of the Methodist Episcopal church at Curtis. Interment was made in the Arbor Cemetery at Stockville.

Coroner R. H. Easton arrived at the scene of the death of Mr. Smith Thursday evening of last week, and decided that an inquest was not neccessary stating that the deceased undoubtley came to his death from heart trouble.

Mr. Smith was very well liked by all the Stockville people and we do not believe that he had an enemy. The bereaved relatives, who were unusually shocked and grieved by reason of the sudden and unexpected death, have the sympathy of the entire community.

The following obituary was prepared and read at the funeral.

"Chellis O. Smith was born the first day of May in 1846. He enlisted in the U.S. army as a private in the 15th Battery, of Light Artilliary, Indiana Volunteers, at Indianapolis on May 7, 1863. He was discharged June 30, 1865, having served his country two years, one month, and twenty three days and taking in part twenty seven battles.

"He was married October 17, 1865 to Miss Nancy Hayes, in Jackson county, Ohio, going immediatley to their home in Indiana. They lived there thirteen years. From there they moved to Kansas, living there for six years. From there they moved to Frontier county, Nebraska, in 1885, where they have remained ever since, living the last four years in Stockville.

To this union nine children were born, two of whom have gone on before. He leaves the aged wife and seven children all of whom were present at the funeral to mourn his loss. He also leaves a brother and a sister in Michigan.

He united with the Church of God in 1899 of which he remained a faithful member. He was a member of Heintzleman Post No. 250 G.A.R. Stockville, Nebraska.

He died December 11, 1912, aged sixty six years, seven months and eleven days. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need."
