Private Co. D 45th PA Infantry

The son of Rev. John Jacob & Julia Ann (Diehl) Albert, in 1850 he was living with his family in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania, but by 1860 they had relocated to Turbotville, Northumberland County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Centre County, March 29, 1862, his father granting written permission to do so, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 10 as a private with Co. D, 45th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was admitted to Cliffburne U.S. Hospital, Washington DC, August 18, 1862, for treatment of an unknown illness and discharged the hospital on August 31. On October 10, 1863, he was wounded (possibly in the right foot) at the battle of Blue Spring in Greene County, Tennessee, and hospitalized at Knoxville, but returned to duty and re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 31, 1863, at Blaines Crossroads, Tennessee. Wounded in the left elbow at the battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864, he was admitted to 1st Division U.S. Hospital at Alexandria, Virginia, on May 14. He later transferred to Cuyler U.S. Hospital in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and there discharged the service by surgeon's certificate December 9, 1864.

After leaving the army, he matriculated at Pennsylvania (Gettysburg) College. He also married Sarah Ann Faber September 20, 1865, in Williamsport, Lycoming County, fathering Hattie G. (b. 12/24/66, d. 01/29/67), Gertrude (b. 10/10/68, d. 08/20/68), John J. (b. @1869), Edward Faber (b. 07/10/72), Allen Diehl (B. 10/03/74), Frederick William (b. 01/??/77), Anne Adelaide (b. 12/??/78), Ruth Winifred (b. Ruth Winifred (b. 01/27/83 - married William Malcolm Corse), and Helen Prudence (b. 06/26/84). He taught in the schools of Williamsport, Lycoming County, and served as principal of a grammar school in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, then moved to Washington DC where he spent more than twenty-five years as a pension examiner. He died the Faber home in Gettysburg during what appears to have been a visit to his wife's family, succumbing to a "cerebral hemorrhage."

1854-1972 ALLAN D. ALBERT'S FUNERAL. Services to Be Held Tomorrow Afternoon at Late Residence. Funeral services for Allan Diehl Albert, the civil war veteran who died at Gettysburg, Pa.. Tuesday afternoon, will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at his late home, 1727 Kilbourne place northwest. Rev. John Weidlev. pastor of the Church of the Reformation, will conduct the services. Interment will be at Arlington, where members of the Union Veteran Lesion will conduct services.

Allen D. Albert, Sr., Dies in the Town of Gettysburg

Allen D. Albert, Sr., a veteran attending the semi-centennial celebration of the battle of Gettysburg, died yesterday afternoon. He was the father of two prominent Minneapolis business men. Mr. Albert was the first of the old soldiers to die in the town of Gettysburg during the celebration. Death was due to paralysis.

Edward F. Albert of the Westinghouse Electric company, living at 3121 Irving avenue south, and Allen D. Albert, Jr., 1937 Kenwood Parkway, are sons of the old soldier. He also is survived by his wife and two other sons, Frederick W. Albert, assistant engineer of the District of Columbia, and Charles F. Albert of Spokane, Wash., and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur C. Dest of Fort Worth, Texas, and Miss Ruth W. Albert of Washington. Miss Albert has
visited here several times.

Allen D, Albert, Sr., was 69 years old and a member of the board of pension review in Washington. He enlisted in the Federal army when he was 16 years old and three times
during the war he was sent to his home in Pennsylvania, severely wounded. He was for many years superintendent of schools in Pennsylvania and' the author of a history of his regiment, the Forty Fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer infantry. He had several degrees from Pennsylvania colleges. Mr. Albert was an authority on pension laws and served during the last two years as adviser to the committee on pensions of the house of representatives.

Allen D. Albext, Jr., will leave immediately for Gettysburg to take charge of the funeral arrangements for his father.
