In 1854, Daniel Bidwell left his family in Vermont and came to California at the solicitation of his brother. He traveled via Panama to Chico. Two years later his wife and four children also came out, while two of their children had already come to California.
Bidwell located on a ranch next to the Sandy Gulch, and improved the land substantially. He named the ranch which is now located on the Esplanade, Five Oaks, on account of five big oak trees standing in the yard.
He married Elizabeth Codman in Middlebury, Vermont, August 1, 1830 in Middlebury, Addison, Vermont and had the following children:
• Henry Codman Bidwell (b. June 9, 1831, Middlebury, Addison, Vermont)
• George Winslow Bidwell (b. November 14, 1837, New York, came to California with his father in 1854)
• James Monroe Bidwell (b. April 6, 1841, New York)
• Mary Elizabeth Bidwell Reed (b. January 5, 1847, Middlebury, Addison, Vermont, married Harry Reed, d. bef 1918)
• Gilroy (twins b. January 5, 1847, Middlebury, Addison, Vermont)
• Emroy (twins b. January 5, 1847, Middlebury, Addison, Vermont)
