Death of Treasurer of Jefferson Union Lodge at Watertown, NY

John H . Gotham, aged 69, a native and life long native of this city, and for 39 years treasurer of Jefferson Union Lodge of Odd Fellows, died suddenly at his home, 1902 State Street, Monday. While he had been in poor health for a number of months he was about his farm and garden in the day of his death, being taken suddenly ill in the afternoon and dying in a few moments. He had previously suffered two strokes of paralysis, but had recuperated to a considerable extent.

Mr. Gotham was one of the first brick makers in Watertown and for years operated a large brick yard in the eastern section of the city with a marked degree of success. When he was 13 years old he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jennery Gotham, to the home on State Street, where he resided up to the time of his death. He was one of the oldest members of Jefferson Union Lodge of Odd Fellows and through almost four decades had carefully guarded its funds. He was also a member of Watertown Grange. Mrs. Gotham died in February a year ago. He is survived by one son John Gotham, of the city, a grandson, John Jr. and a brother Darwin B. Gotham, also of this city. The funeral was held from his late home Wednesday afternoon, Rev Victor H. Lukens officiating. Jefferson Union Lodge of Odd Fellows attended in a body. Burial was made in the family plot in Brookside.

(Side Note:)(Robert "Gotham" Foster) I lived at 1976 State Street for close to 20 years. The old Gotham house use to be on the corner of the Burrville Road (Route 12) and State Street. The house is gone now and has been replaced by a combination gas station and convenience store. I remember the old two story Victorian house well and on one occasion was inside viewing two large trout that had been caught in the nearby Cold Creek by one of the Walker boys that then lived there.

The house was actually part of a farm that once occupied a large portion of the land on State Street. When I was living on State Street in the 1950's and 1960's there were still gardens and horses.
