John Osman Cantrell was born in Polk County, Missouri August 7, 1883, one of nine children born to William Taylor and Ida F. Gunn Cantrell. He came to Texas in the late 1880's and lived there the remainder of his life, mainly in the Muleshoe area. He had lived two years in Clovis, NM until his death.

He married Jessie James in 1910. They had five sons: Vernon, O.D., Don, Louis and Clifford and five daughters, Ida Maye, Naomi, Helen, Betty and Latrell who died at birth. O.D. and Louis died in 1922 in a snow storm.

J.O. had six brothers: Gerald Burns (Gary), James Jefferson (Jim), Benjamin Benton (Ben), Author Ross, Charles Eugene (Gene)and Rube. Two sisters, Golden Isabell and Stella Vivian died in infancy.
