His birth occurred in Humboldt county, Iowa, on the 7th of February, 1874, his parents being Eli H. and Mary E. (Hale) Whitney, both of whom were natives of Ohio. The father followed farming in the Buckeye state in early manhood and subsequently came to Iowa, purchasing a farm in Clayton county which he operated for one year. On the expiration of that period he disposed of the property and bought a tract of land in Webster county which he cultivated for five years and then sold. He next invested in a farm in Jasper county but remained thereon for only one year and then disposed of the place. Another farm which he purchased in the same county remained his home of eleven years. At the end of that time he sold the property and took up his abode in Saybrook, Illinois, where he conducted a hotel throughout the remainder of his life. His demise occurred in May, 1891, while his wife was called to her final rest in December, 1909......"

THOMPSON - The sudden death of Mrs. Mary Thompson came as s great shock to her many friends in this community. Mrs. Thompson had not been in very good health for some time, but was able to be out and attend to her household duties. On Sunday she was taken quite sick and grew rapidly worse until death claimed her. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. at the Methodist Church."

MARY THOMPSON The death of Mrs. Mary Thompson occurred at her home in this city Tuesday, December 14th. Mrs. Thompson has not had the best of health for sometime but her last illness was of short duration and her death was a shock to most of her friends. The funeral services were held, Friday afternoon at the M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. G. Hicks, assisted by Rev. Ilsley, of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in the Maxwell cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Hale was born in Henrietta, Lorain county, Ohio, September 24, 1844. At the age of eighteen she was married to Ely Hamble (Hannible) Whitney and later the couple came to this county, residing on a farm. Of this union seven children were born, one of whom died in infancy and one, Clayton, passed away at the age of thirty-eight. The children living are Mrs. Jennie Witmer, of this city; Mrs. Cora Gagle, of Colfax; Allen Whitney of this place; Roy Whitney of Highmore, S. D., and Edwin Whitney of Canton, MI. Mr. Whitney died May 20 1891, and soon after the family moved to this city where the deceased has made her home since. On February 13, 1894, she was married to R. R. Thompson, whose death occurred June 24, 1904. Mrs. Thompson, then Mary Hale, was converted at the age of fourteen, and united with the Baptist church. On January 4, 1893, she united with the Methodist church of Maxwell and remained an active and faithful member until she was transferred to the church above. She was of a cheerful dispoistion and carried sunshine and good cheer with her wherever she went. She will be greatly missed in the church she loved, the community in which she had so long resided and in the home where she was loved by all. Of her it may be said, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord; they rest from their labors and their works do follow them." Besides the children mentioned above there are left to mourn her loss four brothers and two sisters". CARD OF THANKS To hose who have been with us in our bereavement in the death of our mother, Mrs. Mary Thompson, and by their words and kindly acts have tried to lessen our sorrow we extend our sincere thanks - The children."

"JOINT PUBLIC INSTALLATION. - On last Saturday evening occurred one of the pleasantest events that has transpired for some time in F. A. R. circles, the occasion being a joint public installation of the post and W. R. C. After the guests were assembled, the ladies took charge and installed as follows: Mrs. L. Bartlett, Pres.; Julia Shope, S. V. P.; Eliza Beltz, J. V. P.; Kate Brown, Chap.; Maggie Veneman, Treas.; Lou Coggshall, Sec.; Eva Riddle, Con.; Sue Bruner, G.; Delphy Randlett, A. C.; Mary Thompson, A. G. Mrs. Samuel Flickinger acted as installing officer, and ably performed her duty. When the ladies had completed their work, Jesse Bowen took charge as installing officer for the post, and inducted the following into office: J. R. Wood, Com.; Wm. Starr, S.V.; Thos., Stilwell, J. V.; Peter Brown, O. D.; George Hardenbrook, Q. M.; John Doty, Chap.; L. Bartlett, Surg.; O. riddle, O. G.; Jesse Bowen, Adjt.; Geo. Bruner, Qr. S.; Wm. Veneman, S. M. J. R. In the whole it was a very enjoyable evening, and Mr. Thompson thinks he can attend the corps now at any time he desires, as his wife is outside guard, and he knows he can pass her without a countersign."

Thompson departed Tuesday on an extended tour through Colorado. They will visit W. L. Scott at Boulder, and Mr. Thompson's son, William at Sunset. They expect to visit all the interesting parts of the state and probably the fair at San Francisco, Calif., before returning home."

When the ladies had completed their work, Jesse Bowen took charge as installing officer for the post, and inducted the following into office: J. R. Wood, Com.; Wm. Starr, S.V.; Thos., Stilwell, J. V.; Peter Brown, O. D.; George Hardenbrook, Q. M.; John Doty, Chap.; L. Bartlett, Surg.; O. riddle, O. G.; Jesse Bowen, Adjt.; Geo. Bruner, Qr. S.; Wm. Veneman, S. M. J. R. Wood then made some interesting remarks. In a forcible manner he referred to the fact that each year their ranks were growing thinner, the hair was getting whiter, and the step more feeble. He also called to mind the fact that next March the post will be 12 years old. A lap supper was then served to which all did ample justice, and recounted tales of yore. In the whole it was a very enjoyable evening, and Mr. Thompson thinks he can attend the corps now at any time he desires, as his wife is outside guard, and he knows he can pass her without a countersign."

Thompson departed Tuesday on an extended tour through Colorado. They will visit W. L. Scott at Boulder, and Mr. Thompson's son, William at Sunset. They expect to visit all the interesting parts of the state and probably the fair at San Francisco, Calif., before returning home."
