H. D. Hanks Dies in Hospital at Age of 78
Hyronimus Dyke Hanks, who was a third cousin of Abraham Lincoln, died of a paralytic stroke at 9:23 p. m. yesterday in St. Mary's hospital at the age of 78.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Moran & Sons chapel, with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, after 7 p.m. today.
Mr. Hanks had been ill since Monday morning, when his wife found him lying on the floor in the bathroom doorway, partly dressed and semi-conscious.
He was taken to the hospital immediately but never recovered. Mrs. Hanks is also a patient in the hospital suffering from a wrenched back received when she tried to lift her husband onto his bed.
Mr. Hanks was born March 6, 1862 north of Harristown. He was a son of William and Elizabeth Wyckles Hanks. In Champaign on No. 20, 1889, he married to Miss Augusta Froehlike.
He was in the grocery business until they moved from Decatur to Springfield in 1894. Mr. Hanks was superintendent of Washington park there returning to Decatur in 1937 to live at 419 South Main street.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hanks leaves a half-brother, John Behymer of St. Petersburg, Fla. He also leaves a number of nieces and nephews, including Claude, Gay, Shirley and Virgil Hanks, all of Decatur; Mrs. Russell Garriott of Oreana, and Mrs. Russell Crossman, Mrs. Gilbert Davis and Louis Peters, all of Harristown.
