Member of Co. I, 48th Penna. Militia Regiment, served as a 2nd Lt during the Civil War. He, along with his brother Cyrus, owned and operated Barnet Brothers General Merchandise Store at 118 and 120 Godfrey Street in Rehrersburg, Berks County, Pa. in the late 1800's. John's wife, Hannah (Tyron) Barnet, helped run the general store after he died.
