George W. Caudell was born July 1845 in Alabama County, Georgia. In 1850, at age 5, he moved with his parents and siblings to Johnson County, Arkansas. He married Sarah Jane Arnold in Johnson County in 1867, and they were to have eleven children. They lived in Johnson County until moving to the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. George W. Caudell died about 1905 and is buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Glendale, Oklahoma. His grave is found there with Civil War military marker.
During the Civil War, George W. Caudell, at age 18, enlisted September 2, 1863 at Warren, Arkansas, in the army of the United States. He served as a private in Company A, 2nd Arkansas Infantry, Union Army, along side his brother-in-law John Austin Hunt. They served at Clarksville, Little Rock, and in engagements of the Camden Expedition. George W. "Cordell" and John Hunt received honorable discharges at the end of the War. (Note: The name Caudell is often mis-spelled in legal records as Cordell, Cordel, or even Caudle.)
Birth dates reported in census records indicate that the George W. Caudell family moved to the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, around 1889 when non-Indian persons were allowed legal access. In 1900 the family was well established in Wister, I.T., and attended the Mountain View Baptist Church in nearby Glendale. Founders of that church include George's sister, Amanda Jane, and his brother-in-law, John Austin Hunt.
When a school was established in Glendale, the younger Caudell children attended there. The historic Mountain View Cemetery contains the graves of many of the Caudell family. Descendants of this Caudell family still reside in the Wister area and still attend the Mountain View Church.
