In 1829 he came with his parents to Ill. In Morgan Co. Ill. on July 17, 1834 he married Harriett J. Davis.
In 1858 John and Harriett brought their children to Jefferson Co., Iowa. Here he owned 220 acres of land which was valued (1879) at $30.00 per acre. Their children were: George W. (Mary Ellen McQuire) Johnson, Mary Jane Johnson Nichols, Martha H Johnson, Amanda Caroline (James Martin) McQuire), Sarah A. (Emerson) Campbell, William Reuben (Elizabeth Tweedy) Johnson, Harriett M. (G.B.) McFarland, Dorinda (Charles) Lawson, and Susan A. Johnson.
After the death of beloved Harriett, John married Mary Barthelow on Apr 22, 1862.
In early youth, he joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and his entire life was that of a consistent Christian. He was an excellent man, highly esteemed in the community in which he had lived so long.
