He was born Dec. 3, 1919 in York County, Nebraska to Hugh Emmanuel Pickrel and Alta Marie(Wilken)Pickrel. He moved to Rocky Ford in 1947 where he worked in the insurance, real estate and plumbing business. He served on the Rocky Ford school board from 1956-1960, was president of Arkansas Valley Shrine Club, former president of Rocky Ford Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed to the Colorado State Water Conservancy Board from 1969-1975. He received the 1996 Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award.
Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Rocky Ford; a son, Tom (Claudia) of Bonn, Germany; two daughters, Carolyn Sanders of Rocky Ford, Bette (Jerry) Brick of Loveland, Colo.; sisters, Vera (Dana) Berryman of Scotia, Dorothy (Robert) Tucjek of Lincoln; brother, Evan (Maxine) Pickrel of Alexandria, Va.; five grandchildren.
