Harold entered the Army in the spring of 1943 and was assigned to the 650th Tank Destroyer Battalion. During training in the Louisiana Maneuvers, the rain turned the field into mud, stranding many of the vehicles and cutting the training short. Many recruits stayed behind to help free the vehicles. Harold was one of these men and was accidentally crushed by his own tank destroyer on December 31st and died before he could be treated at Camp Polk.
