In 1778 he was granted a license to operate an "Ordinary" or roadhouse where travelers could obtain food, drink and lodging.
In 1789, he sold his business to his brother-in-law, Edward Moseley (also a REV.WAR soldier, who is buried in Va. Beach, VA.)

In 1789 he began a business in Henry County, VA. with Peter Perkins called "Bouldin and Perkins Iron Works."
In 1804 he bought Peter Perkins out and renamed the business "Thomas Bouldin and Sons Iron Works."

Thomas acquired about 1500 acres of land between the Smith River and Horsepasture, VA. along Grassy Creek.
There he operated many tobacco farms.

His wife Martha, was the oldest daughter of Captain Edward Moseley and his wife Amey Green, and a third cousin of President Thomas Jefferson.
Her mother, Amey Green, was the daughter of William Green and Amey Clay, the great-aunt of Henry Clay, the noted American statesman from Ashland Kentucky, who served as Secretary of State under President
John Quincy Adams from 1825-1829.

The names below were copied from an old ledger kept by Col. George Hairston, who operated a store at his estate, "Marrowbone," in Henry County, Virginia. This plantation was situated on the Marrowbone River, near Martinsville.
(George Hairston (1750-1827) was a son of Robert Hairston and his wife, Ruth Stovall.)
