A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 24, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 11 as a private with Co. A, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Captured at the battle of Carter's Woods (Stephenson's Depot) in the early morning hours of June 15, 1863, he was incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond, Virginia. Following parole, he was forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, where he deserted in the company of several hundred comrades but returned on his own, arriving back with the regiment by October 5, 1863. The regiment invoked no disciplinary measures. Captured outside Petersburg, Virginia, June 23, 1864, "near Yellow House," he was ultimately incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia. Among those transferred to the prison at Millen on October 31, he was paroled at Savannah, Georgia, November 25, 1864, and honorably discharged the service February 2, 1865.
He married Delia Ann Shearer August 5, 1866, and fathered Minnie May (b. 03/04/67), Carrie Shearer (b. 02/24/69), Anna Cassandra (b. 01/05/71), Robert Edwin (03/14/72), Charles Jacob (b. 12/10/74), Henrietta Delia (b. 03/14/77 - married Harry Ervin Feiser), William Augustus (b. 09/02/79), Mabel Louise (02/02/82 - married Horace George Weist), Helen Jane (b. 06/08/84), John S. (b. 04/05/87), Catharine Amelia (b. 02/07/90 - married Ivan Franklin Baker), and Mary Margaret (b. 02/01/94 - married Earl Eugene Bupp). He claimed he attended President Abraham Lincoln's second inaugural address on March 4, 1865, and shook the president's hand afterward.
