In 1831, just 7 years old, Louisa immigrated from Bristol, England to New York City with her parents William Gerring and Louisa Babcock. She married Edward Parkhurst in NYC in 1850. Edward and his new bride removed to Maine, and Louisa owned and ran millinery shops in both Gardiner and Gorham Maine over the next 20 years.
Her husband Edward was an accomplished "oil and fancy painter" (the term from census records) and he traveled extensively across the United States and to Europe doing commissioned murals and nature paintings. I find no evidence Louisa ever traveled with him, but she had her shops and 4 children to keep her busy.
Edwards oil paintings have been found in several libraries and museums. The family always enjoys hearing when another has been located.
