∼Lois Thacker Gilleland, age 93, of Rome, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, in a local hospital following a short illness.
Mrs. Gilleland was born in Floyd County, Georgia on April 9, 1921, the daughter of the late Ira Thacker and the late Myrtice White Thacker. She spent all her life here in Rome; the early years working at Miller's Department Store and Fred Fowler Cleaners. Then later was kept busy being a happy homemaker, gardener, and creator of delicious offerings from the kitchen. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shelby Gilleland, in 1995. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Bud Thacker of Atlanta, Bunk Thacker of Rome, and James Thacker of Rome; three sisters, Irene Lipham of Rome, Esther Jarrard of Rome, and Margaret Fowler of Rome. She was a member of Sherwood Forest Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Dean Gilleland and his wife, Joyce, Lindale; two grandchildren, Hayley Davis and her husband, Mark, Cave Spring, and Todd Gilleland and his wife, Jennifer, Rome; three great grandchildren, Taylor and Braden Gilleland, and Joshua Davis. Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. Special nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, 3002 Maple Road, Rome, with the Rev. Tony Christie and Dr. Ralph Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends between 1 and 2pm just prior to the service. At other times, the family may be reached at 16 Summit Drive, Lindale, at the son's home.
Pallbearers will include Todd Gilleland, Braden Gilleland, Mark Davis, Joshua Davis, Wendell Rhodes and Corey Rhodes.
