When the Civil War broke out, George Craver was among the first to volunteer. A resident of Blooming Grove, Indiana he enlisted as a private on August 19, 1862. He was mustered into Company G, 68th Indiana Infantry on August 19, 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant. He was over several of the southern states during his term of service and fought in 16 hard battles without receiving any very great injuries. He was with Sherman during the Atlanta campaign and then with Thomas in the final campaign against Hood in Tennessee. He was captured at Mumphardsville, Kentucky but was paroled the next day. When he was mustered out on June 20, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee he returned to his home in Indiana.
