Charles was married to Mary E. Wheeler 6 Mar 1860 at the Methodist Episcopal Church, Smithtown Branch, Suffolk Co., LI, NY . They had two sons, Charles Henry and Arthur William.
Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 21 on August 11th. 1862. He was 5 ft. 8 in., blue eyes, light colored hair, and a ruddy complexion. At the time of enlistment, Charles gave his occupation as farmer. Private Blydenburgh was attached to the 71st. New York Infantry, Company "C" Excelsior Brigade. He was part of the 2nd Regiment of Sickles Brigade, serving under U.S. General Hooker's Division, Army of the Potomac. According to his medical records on or about June 15, 1863 Charles was a patient at the Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, District of Columbia. He died there on June 30th, 1863, cause of death was listed as Chronic Diarrhea. He died two days before his unit engaged in battle at Gettysburg, PA.
He is buried in the Military Asylum Cemetery, Washington, D.C. (Source: Alphabetical Index to Places of Internment of Deceased Union Soldiers.)
Charles's Grandson Private Charles Henry III Aug 1895- Sep 1918, was destined to suffer the same fate, he died at Fort Dix at the young age of 23 in World War I.
