Israel Applegate was born September 15, 1839 in Cedar Grove section of Toms River, Dover Township, Ocean Co, New Jersey. He was the son of Thomas and Hannah Applegate. He enlisted in the Army August 15, 1861 by Capt. John Lucas in Company F, First New Jersey Cavalry, Washington, D.C. He died in the service of disease at Camp Mercer, Virginia on November 7, 1861 at age 22 years. His older brother Edwin R. Applegate served in the 9th Regentment NJ Voluteers.
